Family Violence is a deeply connected to the broader social, economic and structural conditions experienced by people across Gippsland. Housing insecurity, poverty, unemployment, limited access to services, social isolation, disability, health inequities and geographic disadvantage can increase vulnerability to family violence, while experiencing family violence can in turn make it significantly harder for people to secure safe housing, maintain employment, access education, participate in community life and achieve financial security.

These issues are particularly complex in Gippsland, where people experience different levels of access to services and support depending on where they live. For some communities such as Far East Gippsland and parts of South Gippsland and Wellington distance, transport limitations, workforce shortages and service availability can create additional barriers to getting help. Family violence can also compound existing disadvantage, creating cycles of instability that can persist long after a person has sought support.

Understanding these connections is essential to developing effective policy and responses.  Addressing family violence requires more than the ability to respond to incidents, but consideration for systems, conditions and inequalities that shape access to safety and wellbeing.
